Raincrow was the first of James's originals that Lori ever heard, and it convinced her to join the band that he had invited her to join. She felt drawn to the feel of the song, the melancholy that winds through it.
James had to explain to her that a raincrow is a cuckoo, and that the cuckoo was mocking him in the song.
Sometimes, just when you think things are going a certain way, and that you should be content, you'll hear that nagging little voice that says, "not so fast, buster", and you start to realize that you aren't completely comfortable or happy, because you are waiting for the other shoe to drop. Or, maybe the voice starts mocking you after something discouraging happens, as if you should have known it would all go sideways, because that's what life does. That voice is the Raincrow.
"Sing a song, sing hallelujah
Prayer of thanks, your baby's come back to ya
She won't cause no trouble for a week or two
In the morning when the sun comes up
The mockingbirds are singing but my mind's still stuck
On Old Man Cuckoo singing in the sycamore tree"
